Christian Gonzalez backs Mike Vrabel over Dianna Russini controversy: 'I ride behind Vrabes any time'

Patriots' Gonzalez stands by Vrabel amid Russini flap

New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez expressed strong support for head coach Mike Vrabel following controversy over Vrabel's past relationship with former reporter Dianna Russini. Gonzalez told reporters he would "ride behind Vrabes any time," declining to detail team discussions but affirming Vrabel's coaching credentials. The remarks came as Vrabel sought counseling during later rounds of the NFL Draft.

Gonzalez's stance aligns with team captains Hunter Henry and Robert Spillane, who emphasized focus on football amid the off-field issue. Henry said the team remains concentrated on building within the locker room. Spillane noted Vrabel keeps priorities on football despite personal matters.

The Patriots issued a statement before the draft's first round expressing full support for Vrabel, who had communicated his commitment to improvement. Vrabel attended the draft's first two nights but stepped away for rounds four through seven to begin counseling, as he explained in a statement promising his best self to family, team and organization. He referenced difficult conversations with those close to him.

Photos emerged showing Vrabel and Russini together at a Sedona, Arizona, resort, with earlier 2020 images from a New York City bar depicting them kissing; those were obtained by the New York Post. At the time, Vrabel coached the Tennessee Titans and wore his wedding ring; Russini worked at ESPN. Russini, now married to Shake Shack executive Kevin Goldschmidt with two children, later joined The Athletic.

Vrabel has been married to Jen since 1999; they have two sons.
